Reading is something that I’ve loved ever since I was a child. My mum is an avid reader and so I grew up in a house with overflowing bookshelves in almost every room. Over the past few years, reading has become something that’s been squeezed to the edges of my day to day life and so, when I was thinking about what I wanted to make time for in 2018, reading was high on my priority list.
I’m a fast reader and travel a lot for work so I wanted to set a goal that would force me to build reading into my day to day life and eliminate the option for slacking off and then being able to catch up with a reading marathon. I also wanted to have a mix of fiction and non-fiction books so that there would be an element of relaxation as well as an element of learning in the goal…. I know from experience that trying to read too many books that require thinking in a short space of time doesn’t end in success!
So, my goal is to read at least 100 fiction books and at least 52 non-fiction books by December 31, 2018. It’s a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) but it’s one I’m excited about.
I joined a local chapter of “The Girly Book Club” in 2017 and have really enjoyed the books that made the reading list this year so I’ve decided to use the club’s past reading list as the basis for my 100 Fiction Books. For the non-fiction books, I chose 52 books based on suggestions from friends and my own collection. Some of them I’ve read before and some I haven’t. I don’t tend to re-read books once I’ve finished them (there are always so many more still to read!) but I’ve realized recently that there are several books that have had a profound impact on me and yet I barely remember anything about them. I thought it would be useful to a) read them again and make notes about the points that resonated with me and b) to see if reading the material again at a different age and from a different experience/knowledge base might change my perception of the message.
You can find a list of the books on the site and I’ll be sharing my progress and my thoughts on each book as I read it.
